Is the gusher really capped this time? So far it seems to be holding. Last evening, BP installed a new containment cap to contain the crude oil that has been escaping since the incident occurred three months ago. In a delicately choreographed effort, deep-sea robots swarmed around the ruptured oil well on Monday to attach the tighter-fitting cap that could finally stop the continuous flow of crude oil. A nightmare is looming in the Gulf of Mexico. Following the April 20th rig explosion, roughly 2.6 million gallons of oil have spilled in the Gulf. The blast, which killed 11 workers, now poses a threat to beaches, fragile marshes, and marine mammals, along with fishing areas that are among the world’s most productive. (more…)

As efforts to contain the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico increases, so do the fears. Engineers are hoping that a towering metal box will capture much of the oil that is still spewing and pump it nearly a mile up to a tanker ship. Indeed, this is a daunting task – one that has never been done before. This led Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry to say, “We are all hoping this containment system will work.” (more…)
